Night swells
I wonder where the geese
Have flown to, worry that they have
Left this mountain town forever

“They have gone north and another
Bird has come up from the south”
Echo a lost biology lecture
I can see the details of this new bird

It is summer, drought will threaten
As the atlantic draws tropical storms
Rain falling and currents confused
Miles away from hot sidewalk steps

A dozen or more toward you
Strong jaw and hands and arms
Voice assuring geese always return
In winter, I imagine your response

Because i can feel you wash over me
When no words form in your mouth
I forget to tell you but you remember
Answers to my dreams and feel me

I am happy it is summer, brief
But we sleep tangled and hot
Dreaming of birds and stores
Mundane trappings of modern life

Night swells
I wonder where the geese
Have flown too, worry that they have
Left this mountain town forever
